Research regarding mental health has fallen far behind over the years, leaving us with insufficient means to treat high risk individuals. It is estimated that up to 50% of those who suffer from major depression do not respond to the traditional therapy and medicinal treatments we have available today. Latest research in the last 2 years shows differences in structure and biochemistry of the brain in these individuals, as well as differences in the way their brains process emotions. With these new breakthroughs, researchers have slowly begun working with new experimental treatment methods and a small number of people have begun seeing major improvement.
The Suicide Rebellion is an organization dedicated to directly supporting these efforts through fundraising and education. We aim to fight the stigma surrounding depression and suicide in the hopes that those who suffer from it will not feel alone and will be more likely to reach out for help. It is important for family and loved ones to understand that depression is as real and as serious as any physical illness and can be terminal. It is something to be taken seriously and every available treatment option should be explored.
